One of the most popular and well known manufacturers of watches in the world is Timex.  They're also a very old company, created in Switzerland in 1854.  In addition to making some of the best watches, they also make some of the best heart rate monitors.  The Timex heart rate monitors are well known for their reliability and ease of use, as well as having chest straps where the battery can be user replaced.  Although they are less expensive than many heart rate monitors, realize that none of them are incredibly advanced.
